EV Charging Station in Village to be Reviewed by Trustees in April
The Homer Board of Trustees will review its options for two electric vehicle chargers located behind the Recreation Department building on South Main Street during its April meeting.
Homer Mayor Pat Clune raised the issue during Tuesday’s board meeting, noting that concerns about the chargers have been discussed before and that the village does not want the matter to be overlooked amid other ongoing issues.
Two primary concerns were highlighted. The first involves safety, specifically exposed wiring at one of the chargers. Clune suggested the village could consider removing the unit if it continues to pose a safety risk.
The second issue is that the chargers currently do not collect any user fees.
“At some point it was supposed to be charged a fee, a fee for use,” Clune said. “Somewhere along the line that fell off or was never implemented.”
Trustee Liz Arnold said the chargers were initially offered free of charge to encourage people to use them. However, she noted the equipment is no longer supported by the vendor, which has led to malfunctions and repeated errors. Arnold said she has been researching other options, including potential replacements.
