State officials are investigating a fatal house fire in Enfield on Saturday (December 28) that took the life of a 72-year-old woman.
Troopers were first on the scene at a home on North Applegate Road, arriving just before 1 p.m. after a neighbor reported the fire but did not know whether or not there was anyone inside.
Police arrived to find heavy flames and smoke coming from the home, which prevented them from being able to enter safely.
Crews from Enfield Fire Department quickly arrived and began battling the blaze, followed up by mutual aid from Ithaca, Trumansburg, Enfield and Mecklenburg Fire Departments.
Eventually, they were able to put the fire down, at which point they located 72-year-old Helen Freelove deceased inside. She was taken to a nearby hospital for an official autopsy.
Investigators from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and the New York State Police Forensic Identification Unit were on scene, and troopers were also assisted by New York State Park Police, Trumansburg Village Police and New York State Environmental Conservation Police.
At this time, no determination has been made about the cause of the fire and it remains an open investigation.
