Cortland local and former music teacher for the Cortland City Schools Jen Rafferty is also the CEO of Empowered Educator, a group dedicated to easing teacher stress and burnout in the classroom.

Rafferty began the endeavor in 2020 as a response to teacher’s experiencing burnout as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with our own Matt Brooks at the X101 Studios, Rafferty explains how beginning to understand the impact of the pandemic can help teachers begin to understand their burnout.

“One of the biggest obstacles I think for people to not just identify their burnout, but the know what to do with it is really understanding that we all went through something really big. We’re all going through something really big and we need to talk about it.” Rafferty said to X101.

She’ll also be delivering a talk as one of several speakers on the subject of empowerment tomorrow, Saturday, October at the Ithaca College TEDx stage 10am-3pm. Learn more about her company, Empowered Educator, at EmpoweredEducator.com.
