An investigation began back on January 18th, when officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Offices responded to a reported fraud that had been occurring at Harbor Freight Tools on Route 281 in Cortlandville.
While officers were investigating, they were able to determine that 45 year old Margaret E. Hollenbeck of Homer, who was also an employee of the store, had made several false returns to the store for merchandise she never purchased. Once Hollenbeck made the fake return, she would then credit the cost of the goods to herself.
On February 13th, Hollenbeck responded to the Sheriff’s Office and was arrested and charged with 9 counts of Falsifying Business Records in the 1st, a Felony, and 9 counts of Petit Larceny, a Misdemeanor.
She was arraigned and later released on her own recognizance and is due to appear in Cortlandville Town Court.
