Empire Access Launches Free Wi-fi in Downtown Cortland
Empire Access, based out of Prattsburgh New York, has announced following its partnership with the City of Cortland, free wi-fi is now available in the Downtown Cortland area. Empire Access says residents, visitors, and local businesses may now utilize the free, fast, and reliable public wi-fi throughout the downtown area.
“Our partnership with the City of Cortland puts connection within everyone’s reach—residents, visitors, students, and families,” said Kevin Dickens, Empire Fiber Internet CEO. “When fast, free Wi-Fi is available in the places people gather, it strengthens community, expands access, and enhances everyday life.”
The City of Cortland and Empire Access had previously entered into an agreement for public access wifi in the downtown area; the city also receives free internet access at city-operated buildings as part of their deal with Empire Access to use old firewire lines for their fiber-optic cables. Free wifi is also available at city parks, Beaudry, Dexter, and Suggett; the wifi was installed this past fall.
The company has been rapidly expanding their fiber-optic service to the Cortland area, first arriving in 2024. Empire offers symmetrical, gig-ready connectivity to more than 5,500 homes and businesses. According to Empire Access, the Downtown Wi-Fi Project builds on that momentum—extending powerful, reliable internet access into the city’s most active public spaces and fueling Cortland’s commitment to innovation, accessibility, and long-term economic vitality.
“As we put the finishing touches on Main Street, it’s exciting to expand free Wi-Fi access not only downtown, but into our public parks as well,” said Mayor of Cortland, Scott Steve. “This project strengthens accessibility, supports local businesses, and improves connectivity for residents and visitors alike.”
