Elton John’s mother, Sheila Farebrother, has died at age 92. Elton paid tribute to her on his Facebook page, posting, “So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock. Travel safe Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton”
Back in May, Elton announced that he had reconciled with his mother after years of being out of touch. At the time, Elton posted a photo on Instagram of the pair, with a message that read, “Dear Mum, Happy Mother’s Day! So happy we are back in touch. Love, Elton xo.” According to sources, Elton and his mom actually patched things up two years prior to that after not speaking for seven years. Farebrother — who has had a contemptuous relationship with Elton’s husband David Furnish — refused to turn her back on John Reid, Elton’s former manager and lover, as well as Bob Halley, Elton’s former driver and personal assistant. Both men were cut off while Elton restructured his career.
In February 2016, Elton spoke frankly about his then-lack of a relationship with his mother, who had privately and publicly bath-mouthed Elton’s husband, David Furnish, and remained close with Elton’s former employees, despite his protests, revealing, “It upsets me, but to be honest with you, I don’t miss her. When she says things in the press, like last year: ‘I haven’t spoken to Elton since he married that f***ing ass**** David Furnish. . .’ That was pretty hard to take.” Elton, who sent her flowers for her 90th birthday — but did not call her — added: “I don’t hate my mother. I look after her, but I don’t want her in my life.”
Elton John admitted to us that the past 25 years, in which he married longtime partner David Furnish and had two children with him, have marked the happiest and most centered his life has ever been: “Life since 1990 has been all about trying to grow up, trying to see things from a different perspective — listening. And I was lucky to find my partner and that’s been the saving grace of my life, as well.”
