This updates a story from Tuesday on X101 and here at wxhc.com:
Late on New Year’s Day, at about 11:24 pm, New York State Police in Homer were called to a one car fatal rollover crash on East River Road in the Town of Cortlandville.
Troopers found a 2001 Honda Civic had ended up on its roof off the west shoulder.
The vehicle was driven by Ryan Card, age 23, of Cortland. State police say Card was northbound when he missed a curve and drove off the west shoulder. The small vehicle hit some trees then rolled down an embankment.
Officers say Mr. Card was deceased at the scene and that an autopsy will be conducted by Cortland County Coroner Kevin Sharp.
Sheldon Clawson, 22, of Cortland, was a passenger in the vehicle. Cortlandville Fire Department rescuers got him out of the vehicle and he was taken by ambulance to SUNY Upstate Medical. Police say he has several contusions and fractures.
Nikiah M. Hakes, 18, of Groton, was also a passenger. She was also transported by ambulance to SUNY Upstate Medical with internal injuries, according to troopers. Both are currently in stable condition.
The state police investigation is ongoing.
