One of Cortlandville’s town wells is now shut down after a raw water sample tested positive for the presence of E. coli earlier this month.
However, residents are being told there’s no need to worry.
Officials with the County Health Department assured on Monday that all drinking water in the area is clean and that the discovery of this type of bacteria in raw, untreated groundwater is not so uncommon.
No cause for the bacteria has yet been discovered, but all raw samples taken since have come up clean and safe.
The town immediately closed the well on Terrace Road out of an abundance of caution.
