Dryden Southworth Library Receives $20K Grant – Aims to Provide Greater Accessibility

The Southworth Library Association in the Village of Dryden has announced the library has been awarded a national grant dedicated towards small and rural libraries in the amount of $20,000.

The library says the grant will help the library work with residents with disabilities. Funding will go towards training, reworking physical space inside the library to be more accessible and provide meaningful programming for those with disabilities.

“We are very excited to be chosen for this amazing opportunity,” said Library Director Diane Pamel. “We are looking forward to discovering how we can improve our services to ensure that people with disabilities feel welcome and comfortable in our space.”

The funding is part of an initiative by the Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities, an American Library Association. The library additionally said in a release it will have its staff hold a conversation with residents on how the library can better serve disabled residents within the community and their families.

Our goals for this grant are twofold. First, we have seen increased use of our library by the adult disabled community in collaboration with the Racker Center residential program, Challenge Industry trainings and other individuals, and we want to have a physical space and programming that is more accommodating and inclusive. We also want to reach out to families who may not have been comfortable bringing their disabled children to library programs and into our space and to create an environment that encourages them to come and provides assistance to them in our programs, supplies and materials or a modified physical space.

For those interested in becoming involved or joining the conversation with the library on accessibility residents are asked to contact Library Director Diane Pamel via email at SouthWorthLibrary@gmail.com or by calling the library at 607-844-4782.
