Dryden Man Charged Following Assault of Corrections Officer at Tompkins County Jail
Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne says 37 year old Matthew T. Skardinski of Dryden has been charged with Assault in the 2nd, a Felony, following an incident at the Tompkins County Jail on January 22.
Around 3:46pm, Sheriff Osborne says a corrections officer was assaulted by Skardinski. The officer was supervising the recreation area when two incarcerated individuals, one being Skardinski, had gotten into a verbal altercation. Osborne says the officer observed both individuals assume a fighting stance while they faced one another and issued direct verbal commands for both to stop. The officer then intervened to prevent further escalation.
While intervening, Skardinski attempted to punch the other inmate. He would miss and strike the corrections officer in the face. Osborne says the officer sustained injuries, but was able to successfully de-escalate the situation and restore order.
Skardinski was arraigned on his new assault charge and was remanded back to Tompkins County Jail.
“The Sheriff’s Office takes assaults on staff seriously and remains committed to ensuring the safety of both employees and those in custody.”
