On Monday afternoon, troopers from the Homer barracks were called for someone driving a dark colored Mazda very fast in and out of traffic on 81 south.
Callers to 9-1-1 reported the car was in Preble, but troopers did not catch up to the driver until he was forced to bail out of his burning car in Virgil, off the expressway on Rt 11 near Reagan Road.
State Police identify the driver as John Perry, 36, of Syracuse.
Troopers say Perry tried to run away into a swamp, but a Cortland County Sheriff’s deputy found him.
Perry’s blood was tested for drugs and results are expected soon, according to state police officers, who charged Perry with driving without a license, and driving while his ability was impaired by drugs, among many traffic violations.
Perry is in the Cortland County Jail awaiting bail, until his next day in court.
Virgil and Cortlandville firefighters got the call for the car fire.
