Driver Avoids Stopped Traffic on I81 in Marathon; Hits Another Vehicle and Kills Driver

Just after one in the afternoon on Thursday, August 15th, State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on I81 North in Marathon. The crash left one person dead.

State Police say a preliminary investigation into the cause of the crash shows 26 year old MD Sanzid Bin Rashid of the Bronx, was traveling north on I81 in a Honda SUV. As Rashid passed the Marathon exit, he encountered slowed traffic due to ongoing road construction in the area. That’s when State Police say he swerved from the right lane he was driving into the left lane to avoid the stopped traffic. When Rashid went into the left lane, that is when he hit a Toyota.

The impact of the crash ended up having both vehicles exit the roadway with the Honda overturning and landing on its side.

The driver of the Toyota, a 71 year old male from New Jersey, did not survive. A passenger in the Toyota, a 70 year old woman, also from New Jersey, was transported to Upstate with non-life-threatening injuries. For Rashid, he was treated on the scene.

State Police say the investigation remains ongoing with the Traffic Incident Management Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Assisting State Police were members from the New York State Department of Transportation.
