Don’t Get Scammed This Holiday Season – Sheriff’s Office Reminding Residents to Stay Aware

The holiday season is fast approaching and with that, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to stay aware this holiday season to avoid becoming a victim of a scam. Residents who get calls, emails, texts, or social media contact to where you have to question its legitimacy, the Sheriff’s Office says to end the contact immediately.

The Sheriff’s Office is also reminding residents that no legitimate collection agencies, law enforcement agencies, or charities will ask you to pay for services in the form of gift cards. Never provide anytype of personal information if you receive a request by a suspicious contact.

If you suspect fraudulent activity in a call or message, the best thing to do is to hang-up or do not reply or click on any links and to contact your local law enforcement agency.
