An online fundraiser has been set up for a child who lost both his parents last Monday (July 12) to a double-fatal drowning accident in the town of Newfield.

Investigators say 27-year-old Carissa A. Stone, of Newfield, and 29-year-old Michael R. Mayer, of Van Etten, got pulled underneath by a strong current while swimming in restricted waters known as the West Branch Cayuga Lake inlet.

Neither would survive.

Their son, five-year-old Gunner, is one of three children who witnessed the tragedy. He was joined by his male and female cousins, both of whom are nine-years-old. None of the kids were physically hurt.

Showing poise, the children flagged down a passerby vehicle to the side of the road, who then called police.

Members of the family are now taking care of Gunner, but members of the public can offer their support.

A GoFundMe page was organized to help support his future education.

In just two days, over $5k has been donated by more than 60 individuals.

Carissa Stone’s sister, Magen, shared the fundraiser on Facebook thanking the community for their support.
