Dogs Now Allowed in Restaurant Outdoor Seating Areas

Local News

Restaurants will now have the option of allowing dogs in outdoor dining areas thanks to a new law signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The measure was pushed by Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal and State Sen. Kemp Hannon. Both houses of the State Legislature approved the bill in June. Cuomo signed it on Monday.

“It will benefit both owners and patrons, boosting revenue and ensure safety standards are followed,” Hannon, a Long Island Republican, said in May.

Under the new law, pet dogs will be permitted if the restaurants allow them in outdoor dining areas.

There will be certain standards in place for eateries that allow dogs in outdoor spaces. The eateries must have a separate outdoor entrance to allow dogs into the spaces and the pets won’t be allowed on benches, chairs, seats and other furniture.
