DMV Reminds New Yorkers to Get REAL ID With Fed Deadline Looming

The State DMV is reminding New Yorkers that in six months, a standard license or non-driver ID won’t be accepted for airline travel within the United States.

As part of a requirement of the federal REAL ID Act, travelers will need to have a REAL ID, an Enhanced ID or a passport to board domestic flights starting May 3rd, 2023. The federal measure requires those applying for a REAL ID to do so in person, though to streamline the process customers at select DMV offices can get their REAL ID/Enhanced ID application digitally pre-screened prior to their visit to save time.

An Enhanced ID is acceptable for REAL ID purposes and can be used instead of a passport to return to the US from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries.
