DMV Reminding Residents to Protect Themselves From Vehicle Thefts
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding residents to protect themselves against vehicle theft. The DMV says the month of July is Vehicle Theft Prevention Month and so far this year, the DMV has recovered 188 stolen vehicles. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows over 850,000 drivers fall victim to car thefts every year.
“Summer is the busiest season for vehicle thefts, so it is a good time to remind New Yorkers about the steps they can take to protect their purchase,” said DMV Commissioner and Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Chair Mark J.F. Schroeder. “You can act to prevent your car from being stolen, and there are ways you can check to be sure a vehicle you are thinking about buying has not been taken from someone else.”
The DMV says over the years there has been an increase in stolen vehicles. In the first six months of 2024, the DMV recovered 120 vehicles totaling over $3.5 million in value, but also recovered 31 stolen parts. Overall for 2024, 303 stolen vehicles were recovered.
Tips from the DMV on how residents can protect themselves from their vehicle being stolen include:
Never leave your key fob in the vehicle.
Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.
Park in well-lit areas if possible.
Never leave valuables in your vehicle, especially if they can be seen
If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, you should also ensure you don’t unintentionally purchase a stolen vehicle. You can do this by checking the vehicle’s VIN number before buying. Checking this will ensure that it is not listed as stolen or even totaled as a flood vehicle. Make sure to check for any odometer discrepancies and be cautious when purchasing a vehicle locally with out-of-state titles or a vehicle with a NY title, but out of state inspection stickers, plates, or temporary tags.
