Since the beginning of the year New York State DMV investigators are cracking down on fake license plates.
During that time efforts have resulted in 420 citations, including 92 plate violations, 66 traffic tickets, 36 towed vehicles, 29 improper registrations and 26 plates seized. The usage of the fake items are often to avoid tolls, vehicle registration fees, speed and school-zone enforcement cameras, as well as detection from law enforcement.
“When someone uses a fake license plate, that means hardworking taxpayers and motorists are footing the bill for someone trying to cheat the system,” said DMV Commissioner and Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Chair Mark J.F. Schroeder.
Officials say traffic safety is public safety, and this months-long endeavor to combat the rise of fake license plates is their latest effort to keep the roads safe.
