DMV Expands Online Real ID Application

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced it has expanded the availability of the online pre-screening tool for REAL ID and Enhanced ID applications. The expansion will allow customers to ensure their applications are accurate and complete before heading to the DMV to submit documents and have their photo taken.

“One and done, that’s what we’re aiming for,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “This process is extremely successful. Almost all the applicants who have used it – more than 97 percent – have been able to make only one visit to a DMV to finalize the application and get their photo taken. Here at DMV, we are reexamining and improving nearly every transaction so customers can get their business done faster and easier.”

The Federal REAL ID enforcement deadline is May 7, 2025. On and after that date, anyone 18 years of age or older who plans to fly domestically or enter certain federal buildings will be required to have a REAL ID or a REAL ID-compliant document such as a passport.

Currently, the pre-screening process has been introduced in 30 counties within the state including Tompkins county. Cortland County is not yet part of the pre-screening.

The DMV says though, counties that are not participating in the pre-screening like Cortland County, customers will still have the benefit of using the same online tool to identify documents they will need to bring with them to the DMV.
