DMV Announces Temporary Closure in February For Statewide Software Upgrade

Cortland County Clerk, Brooke Kemak, has announced the Cortland County DMV, along with all other DMVs throughout the state, will temporarily close in February to allow a statewide software upgrade to take place. The temporary closure will be from February 13th at noon through February 18th. The Cortland DMV will reopen at 8:30am on February 19th by appointment only.

The temporary closure is to allow the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles to implement the first phase of a multi-year project to modernize the aging technology infrastructure at the DMV. In order to allow this, New York State will cease all DMV operations, including online transactions and their phone system at 2pm on Friday, February 13th.

On Monday, February 23rd, the Cortland County DMV will return to regular business hours of 8:30am to 4:15pm. Walk-ins are welcome and those who prefer to make an appointment may do so on Thursdays and Fridays, Kemak added.

The updating of the aging software at the DMV has been in discussion in Albany for years. So far, significant work has gone into developing the software at the state level. All county DMV offices rely on the state for equipment and software.

“While a transition of this scale is significant and requires extensive employee training and education, I am hopeful the new system will be a positive change. We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding during this statewide system upgrade and encourage customers to plan accordingly.” Brooke Kemak said in a release.

Kemak added any changes to the closures will be posted on the Cortland County Clerk’s website and their Facebook page, Cortland County Clerk/DMV.
