On Wednesday, February 22nd, in the middle of the icy rain that fell throughout Cortland County, a call came in to the Willet Fire Department of a structure fire on Route 41 within the Town. Reports show the fire began from a propane tank catching on fire within the residence.
Cincinnatus Fire was also dispatched to Willet for mutual aid on the structure fire. Car number 162 responded and was able to be on scene within minutes of the call and confirmed a working structure fire.
Continued investigation by the firefighter found that an elderly woman was still within the burning structure and unable to exit due to being wheelchair bound. The firefighter was able to enter the building and evacuated the trapped woman from the building with only minor injuries.
Willet, Cincinnatus and Marathon Fire Departments were able to make quick work of the fire and the building sustained minimal damage.
