Beginning Sunday (October 24), dialing an area code is longer optional in order to make a phone call.
This includes local and out-of-area numbers.
The change comes after recent adoption of a nationwide three-digit number for the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Hotline.
Wireless customers can now reach the service by simply dialing “988” — which used to be an active telephone exchange, or the first three digits of a seven-digit number (i.e. 607-749-9942).
Landlines have the same convenience come July 2022.
Until then, all phones can still reach the Lifeline 24/7 by calling 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
Friends and family might be saved in your personal contacts without area codes.
You should update them to avoid having issues completing or receiving calls.
