A Michigan-based Developer has donated over 73 acres of property to Cortland County for a new jail facility.
DMK Development, LLC, has agreed to donate the parcel located along Route 13 South in Cortlandville.
The land adjoins the Tractor Supply store on the east side of the highway.
The Cortland County Legislature accepted the donation in a closed-door session during its regular meeting on Feb. 25th. The donation was made public Thursday.
A press release from the county says the donation will save taxpayers nearly $2 million dollars in property acquisition costs.
The Cortland County Legislature has been debating a new jail for several years. Previous reports have detailed overcrowding in the current jail costing the county millions to send inmates to other jails as well higher staffing costs.
Last August, lawmakers hired an engineering firm to identify sites for a new jail. Three sites were identified.
The Legislature must now decide if it plans to move ahead with the project which has an estimated price tag of $38 million dollars.
