The State Department of Health’s reminding funeral directors and consumers about laws in the Empire State regulating fee structure for services performed by funeral homes.

Funeral firms under state rules are normally allowed to set their own charges and to over-charge for transfer of remains from place of death to the funeral establishment. This however does not allow these businesses to put forward a sliding scale of costs based on number of employees at the funeral home, personnel involved or the time or place of death.

Officials with the State Department of Health stated that these state laws were created to prevent deceptive practices and avoid confusion when consumers may be susceptible to exploitation.
