Department of Health Encouraging NYer’s to Get Flu Vaccine

The New York State Department of Health is encouraging all New Yorkers to get vaccinated for the Flu after a reported increase in cases and hospitalizations throughout the state. State Health Commissioner, Dr. James McDonald, has already declared the Flu is prevalent throughout the state and has now required health care workers who have yet to  receive this year’s flu vaccine, to wear masks in certain settings.

“We are seeing a significant, sharp increase in influenza hospitalizations and cases in New York State, particularly in New York City and surrounding areas,” State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said. “If you haven’t already, today is a good day to get the current flu vaccine; it is safe and will lessen symptoms if you do get the flu. Now is the time to protect yourself and your loved ones, stay healthy and enjoy the upcoming New Year celebrations.”

The Department of Health says there has been an 86% increase in lab-confirmed influenza cases for the week of December 21st. There were also 648 people hospitalized, a 57% increase from 414 hospitalized that were hospitalized the week prior. No deaths have been reported in the state yet this year.

The flu shot is available at pharmacies, health clinics and your physician’s office. Locations for a flu shot may also be found HERE. Other ways besides getting vaccinated to protect yourself include washing your hands with soap and water, avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth, covering your mouth when coughing, and sneezing with a tissue.
