Deer Hunting Season Continues Through December 7th – DEC Reminding Hunters to Stay Safe

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) wants all hunters to stay safe this season and is reminding both hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to share the woods and follow proper safety precautions. Deer hunting season began on the 25th and will continue through the 7th.

“With nearly 600,000 New Yorkers participating annually, hunting is among the most popular forms of wildlife-related recreation in the state,” said Commissioner Lefton. “Hunting remains a safe, ecologically important wildlife population management tool, and fosters an understanding and respect for the environment. I encourage everyone enjoying the woods to be aware of their surroundings and follow all outlined safety measures while afield.”

The DEC says hunting remains safe and is only getting safer following the department’s Hunter Education Program, volunteer instructors, and the vigilance of the hunting community. According to the DEC, incident rates from the previous five years are at their lowest levels on record for the state. The DEC, though, is still reminding hunters of these key safety tips to prevent an incident from occurring.

Treat every firearm as if it were loaded;

Control the muzzle, always keep it pointed in a safe direction;

Identify your target and what lies beyond it;

Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire; and

Wear hunter orange or pink.

Hunters before going out should also remember to inform someone who is not going hunting with them where they plan to hunt and an anticipated time they will return from hunting. They should also dress for the weather and plan for both location and elevation changes. Some essential items hunters should bring are a light source, knife, map, and a first aid kit.

More hunting safety tips can be found through the DEC’s website.
