The New York health insurance exchange is reminding state residents that Sunday is the deadline to enroll in health insurance for 2016.
Consumers who do not enroll in a private health plan through the exchange by Jan. 31 will be unable to sign up for the remainder of the year unless they get married, lose employer coverage, get pregnant or experience another “qualifying life event.”
People eligible for Medicaid, Child Health Plus and the Essential Plan which is a new plan for low-income New Yorkers, can enroll all year.
Under the federal Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, nearly all Americans are required to get health insurance or pay a penalty.
New Yorkers can get help enrolling by calling the state health insurance exchange at 1-855-355-5777.
