DA Perfetti honored with SUNY Cortland “Leadership in Civic Engagement Award”

Local News

SUNY Cortland has named District Attorney Patrick Perfetti as the recipient of its Leadership in Civic Engagement Award.

Officials on the selection committee stated the following in their decision announcement:

“Congratulations Cortland District Attorney, Patrick Perfetti, on your Leadership in Civic Engagement Award.
Upon taking office, Perfetti pledged to use a multi-faceted approach to drug addiction, and to better engage open dialogue with the community through local schools and public outreach.
The DA does not believe in locking people up and throwing away the key, but rather has put together a new approach based on three key factors; education & prevention, diversion & treatment, and finally enforcement & prosecution.
Perfetti has formalized the beginning of a new program for drug addicts — the Police and Angel Assisted Recovery Initiative.
Under the Angel Program, which has no cost to Cortland city or county, drug users can surrender themselves, their drugs and paraphernalia to city police and ask for treatment. That person is then checked for any warrants and detainers.
If the addict does not have any warrants and detainers, the police officer contacts an “angel,” who will stay by their side to navigate the process for treatment. The Cortland program currently boasts six volunteer “angels.”
In addition to his innovative to his work as DA, Perfetti is also an avid supporter of the Child Advocacy Center of Cortland County.”
