C’ville man accused of impersonating police online

Local News

A Cortlandville man is accused of impersonating city police officers on Facebook for the second time this year.

It took a joint investigation with help from the county sheriff’s office and state police to identify the culprit as 24-year-old Devon Ismael, of Fairview Drive.

Authorities say he recently fled the area and now resides in North Carolina.

Ismael was set to appear for a similar incident back in March, but that was twice rescheduled due to COVID-19 from March 23 to August 4, then again to September 16.

According to Lt. Michael Strangeway, Ishmael stands accused of posting false information to social media using the profile of at least two Cortland City Police Officers.

His combined charges from both incidents include the following:

  • Falsely Reporting an Incident, 3rd (PL240.50-3a, Class A Misdemeanor)
  • Two counts of Criminal Impersonation 2nd (PL 190.25-4, Class A Misdemeanor)
