Gov. Andrew Cuomo has named former Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala as the Democratic candidate to replace Sen. Thomas Libous — less than one day after Libous was ousted from office for lying to the FBI.
Cuomo announced Fiala as his choice for the Southern Tier seat Thursday morning on the radio.
Fiala’s said she will make a formal announcement next week.
A special election will be held in November to fill the seat.
Fiala was appointed in 2011 as commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles under Cuomo. She resigned last year. Fiala was the first woman to serve as Broome County Executive, elected in 2005.
The 52nd Senate District is made up of Broome, Tioga, and parts of Chenango and Delaware counties.
