Crash Involving Two Tractor-Trailers Temporarily Closes I81 South in Marathon Thursday Night – No Injuries Reported
The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office says officers responded to I81 Southbound in the Town of Marathon just before 8:30pm Thursday night. The crash was reported at the 37 mile-marker, just south of the Exit 38 onramp to I81 South.

On scene, officers found two tractor-trailers completely blocking the two southbound lanes. Further investigation found one of the tractor-trailers was disabled in the right lane of I81 South when the second tractor-trailer was unable to avoid it. The Sheriff’s Office says the driver attempted to swerve at the last moment, which then resulted in the crash.
There were no injuries as a result of the crash.
I81 South was briefly shutdown as a result of the crash and was able to open a single lane for traffic on the shoulder. Assisting on scene were the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, State Police, MAVAC, NYSDOT, Ron’s Towing and Clukey’s Garage. I81 was fully reopened around 12:30 Friday morning.
