County Unemployment Rate Down Nearly 1% From Last Year

The New York State Labor Department has released their preliminary area unemployment rates for the month of October. Overall, the state unemployment remained unchanged at 4.4% for October 2024. The news was better for Cortland County though, the county saw the unemployment decrease by .9% when comparing October 23’ to October 24’.

The county unemployment rate for Cortland County in the month of October was at 3.1%. For October 2023, the unemployment rate was at 4.1%. The Labor Department says Cortland County had an increase of 200 people who were employed and living in the county, at 22,000. The number of those unemployed in Cortland County decreased by 200 to now 700. 

The unemployment rate is calculated based on methods by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. New York’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the current population survey.
