County to Celebrate Reopening of Courthouse Steps This Afternoon

After a number of years of yellow caution tape, traffic cones and fencing blocking the steps to the Cortland County Courthouse from Courthouse Park, the County is now celebrating the completion of the steps this evening at 5pm with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The ceremony will take place outside in front of the main steps to the building.

It was almost a year ago, on May 5th, 2023, when representatives from the Cortland County Legislature, City of Cortland, and Cortland County Courts gathered at the main entrance of the Courthouse for an official groundbreaking on the restoration of the steps.

Funds for the restoration project came from the American Rescue Plan and Assemblymember Anna Kelles securing funds from the state. Kelles spoke during the groundbreaking saying she made sure this needed project was noticed by the State Assembly.

A total of $5.4 million dollars was secured by Kelles from the state for the renovation and restoration projects at the Courthouse. Restoration and renovations were done on the dome and cupola, elevator, HVAC system, and entryway stairs. Additional funds also came from the Dormitory Authority of New York State in the amount of $2.3 million dollars.
