County Mulling Temporary Hiring Pause
The Finance & Administration Committee met Tuesday and tentatively approved implementing a temporary hiring pause for Cortland County pending the full legislature voting to accept it. The next legislative session is scheduled for April 24th at 6 pm.
The Finance & Administration Committee says the decision comes from the need to preserve essential services and maintain fiscal responsibility while the County faces the financial pressures from unfunded state mandates, rising operational costs, and other fiscal constraints.
If approved by the full legislator, the hiring pause would be effective immediately. It would be in effect until June 30, 2025. This means that no full-time, part-time, and temporary positions would be offered in any Cortland County department, agency, or office.
The county says they would have exceptions so that critical services, and public safety would not be interrupted. Those positions would include the Director of Office for Aging, Seasonal Workers, and up to 4 new Corrections Officers.
