County Legislature Gives Approval For Landfill Tipping Fees Increase Effective March 2026

In an effort to help offset expenses, the Cortland County Legislature voted to increase tipping fees at the Cortland County Landfill. Legislators Jones and Cleland voted against the proposed increase.

Effective March 1st, 2026, tipping fees will be increased by $15 per ton to $105 per ton. The adjusted fee was originally scheduled to go into effect on January first, but was changed to March 1st following a motion to amend the effective date by Legislator Paul Heider.

The move comes after a recommendation from the Public Works Committee. Tipping fees were last increased back in 2022 to $90 per ton, an increase of $5 in 2022. According to the county, the current tipping fee of $90 does not cover the cost to operate and maintain the facility and future financial liabilities associated with the landfill.

Following the approval of the increase, the Public Works Department’s Division of Solid Waste will collect the fees from those using the landfill.
