County Legislature Allows Start of Permitting Process For New Landfill Cell
During Thursday’s Cortland County Legislative meeting for the month of October, the Legislature voted unanimously to authorize the start of the permitting process for the construction of a new landfill cell with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
The county landfill is nearing its capacity; the legislature has been in discussions for a number of months on whether or not to add another cell or begin transferring garbage out of the county. The county says developing an additional cell is needed to ensure the county’s ability to responsibly and sustainably manage solid waste is in compliance with environmental regulations.
The next steps the county will go through starting with beginning and completing the required permitting process with the DEC. This process includes engineering design, environmental review, and public notice. The county DPW had requested the authorization in allowing them to proceed with the preparation and submission of the required permit applications and documentations to the DEC. Funding for the engineering and permitting activities will be allocated in next year’s budget, the county noted.
