County Health Department Warns of Rise of Respiratory Illnesses During Fall & Winter Months
The Cortland County Health Department is reminding residents in the county common respiratory viruses typically spread during the fall and winter months. These illnesses include the Flu, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). As temperatures drop, along with the upcoming holidays where people gather indoors, the spread of respiratory illnesses can rise.
The health department is recommending residents to protect themselves and others this fall and winter season. One way is to get vaccinated. The health department says this is the most effective tool for preventing severe respiratory illnesses. You should also get tested if you get sick. Symptoms of the Flu, COVID, and RSA are often very similar. Testing can ensure you get the right treatment. You should also notify your healthcare provider of test results.
Other tips on limiting the spread of respiratory illnesses include avoiding close contact, staying home when you’re sick, covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, cleaning your hands, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and practice good health habits such as ample sleep, physical activity, drinking fluids, and eating healthy.
