County Health Department Offers Tips on Mold Removal at Home

The Cortland County Health Department says the best way to prevent mold growth in your home is to identify and control moisture and water problems within your home. The Health Department says mold spores are everywhere and in your home and can grow on just about any surface that has a sufficient amount of moisture.

If an area of your home has mold, the Health Department has provided tips on how to properly clean it up. The first thing though before cleaning up mold is to remember to avoid breathing in mold or mold spores, and wearing an N-95 respirator mask is strongly recommended. Residents should also wear gloves and goggles.

To remove mold, scrub off hard surfaces with detergent and water and then dry the surface completely. Cortland County residents may also contact the Health Department for a free healthy home assessment through the Healthy Neighborhoods Program at 607-428-5410.

The US Environmental Protection Agency also offers more information on mold. The link to the information may be found HERE.
