County Health Department: Mosquitoes Here Don’t Carry Zika Virus

The Cortland County Health Department can reassure those worried about contracting the Zika virus, which is linked to some birth defects.

The Health Department posted on its Facebook page about the virus, which is carried by mosquitoes and also spread by sexual contact.

The Department reports mosquitoes typically found here do not carry the virus.

Another variety of mosquito, found in much warmer areas, is the usual carrier.

You may also want to know that New York State offers free Zika testing for all pregnant women if they or their partner has been to a Zika-affected area. The state reports 49 cases of Zika in New York so far.
