The Cortland County Health Department is encouraging Cortland County residents to take action against spreading respiratory viruses. Respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, Flu, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) typically spread during the fall and winter seasons.
The Health Department says action taken by residents should include getting vaccinated, testing if you’re sick, notify your healthcare provider of test results and get treatment. Taking action quickly will prevent serious illness or death from COVID-19, Flu, and RSV, getting others sick, and spreading respiratory viruses to others if they do get sick.
Steps to for residents to take to prevent getting sick and spreading viruses to others include:
- Stay at home if you’re sick and get tested
- Avoid contact with those who are sick
- Follow recommendations if you’re exposed to COVID-19
- Improve ventilation by opening windows, change HVAC filters frequently, use portable HEPA filters
- Move indoor activities to outdoors whenever possible
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or alcohol based hand sanitizer
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
- Keep good health habits including: disinfecting surfaces often, plenty of sleep, being physically active, managing stress, drinking fluids, and eating healthy.
