County Dispatcher Honored With Outstanding Performance Award For Actions in Recent Medical Call

The Cortland County Department of Emergency Response and Communications have presented the award of Outstanding Performance to Dispatcher Devin Short. The award was given for his recent actions during a medical call he took.

The Department of Emergency Response & Communications say Dispatcher Short took a 9-1-1 call from a female who believed she was having a heart attack. Short utilized his medical protocols and began to evaluate the caller’s symptoms and conditions. Within less than a minute, he also dispatched Cortland Fire and TLC Ambulance to the caller’s location.

“He reassured the patient that help was on the way, and advised her that he would stay on the phone with her until help arrived. He then noticed the patient’s condition rapidly worsen and becoming unstable. Using his training and experience, he updated responders that the patient was no longer responding to him and may be now be in cardiac arrest” DOERC said in a release.

The call was then upgraded to a critical response call with units dispatched upgrading their response to the scene. Additional resources were also dispatched to the scene to assist. On arrival to the scene, first responders found the patient was in cardiac arrest and began CPR and used an AED with two shocks delivered and restored the patient’s heartbeat.

“Dispatcher Short’s actions were instrumental in the positive outcome of this call. We thank him for his efforts on this call and the work he does every day.”
