County Department of Social Services Announces HEAP Applications to Open November First
The Cortland County Department of Social Services has announced the 2024-2025 Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) will open on November 1st for income eligible residents within Cortland County. Those who are eligible for HEAP can apply and receive assistance paying their heating bills during the winter season. The Department of Social Services (DSS) says residents do not need to come into their office at the County Office Building to file an application.
The fastest and easiest way to apply is through MyBenefits.NY.Gov or calling (607) 428-5400 to have an application mailed to your residence. HEAP is a federally funded energy assistance program that assists with heating bills, furnace repairs, and occasionally home cooling during summer months.
Regular HEAP opens November 1st and is projected to remain open until March 15th, 2025. Eligibility is based on income and housing situation. Requirements include residents paying directly for heating costs or rent which includes heat. Those who have Temporary Assistance or SNAP are automatically set to receive HEAP benefits.
DSS says there is also heating equipment repair and replacement. The program is available for low-income homeowners to repair or replace heating equipment to ensure it functions. The homeowner must reside in the residence that receives the benefit. Those who are without heat will be required to visit the DSS office to complete an application to be seen that day.
Details on all available HEAP benefits may be found on the Cortland County Department of Social Services website by clicking HERE.
