Yesterday afternoon, around 3pm, the Cortlandville Fire Department was dispatched to a reported brush fire in the area of I81 Southbound, just north of Exit 11 (Cortland) and County Highway.
Smoke from the fire could be seen at a distance as crews responded to I81, and Front Street in the City of Cortland. The fire appeared to be coming from a homeless encampment that is located in the area. The fire consumed nearly half an acre of dried vegetation.
One person in the area of the fire was evaluated by TLC for undisclosed injuries.
Firefighters worked quickly to knock-down the fire. Crews were able to have the fire knocked out within 40 minutes of the call. Assisting the Cortlandville Fire Department was TLC Ambulance, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police.
