On Monday, January 29th, officers arrested 26 year old Shelana L. Cooney of Cortland with charges of Welfare Fraud in the 3rd, Grand Larceny in the 3rd, and 3 counts of Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the 1st, all Felonies. The arrest comes after the conclusion of an investigation conducted by both the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office and the Cortland County Department of Social Services.
The investigation found Cooney had provided fraudulent information to the Department of Social Services regarding her household income and composition. The Sheriff’s Office says as a result she received benefits she was not entitled to over $5,600 dollars.
Cooney was arraigned in Cortland City Court on Monday and was then released. She is to reappear in Cortland City Court next month.
