Cortland Woman Arrested After Stealing Over $10K in Welfare

On Wednesday, June 7th, Officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26 year old Shelly L. Mauzy of Cortland after an investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Office and Cortland County Department of Social Services found she received benefits over $10,000 she was not entitled to.


The investigation conducted showed Mauzy filed fraudulent paperwork to the Department of Social Services on her household income and composition. With the false information, from November of 2021 to January of this year, she received benefits in excess of $10,000.

She was charged with Welfare Fraud in the 3rd, Grand Larceny in the 3rd, and 5 counts of Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the 1st, all Felonies. Mauzy was arraigned and later released. She is due back in City of Cortland Court next month.
