Cortland Submits $25 Million Downtown Hotel Project For Upstate Funding Competition

Local News

The City of Cortland wants a flagship hotel downtown. The city is turning to a regional competition to fund the hotel project along with other big ideas to transform the area into a tourist destination.

The Cortland Downtown Partnership has submitted three big ideas as part of Governor Cuomo’s $1.5 billion Upstate Revitalization competition.

The state plans to award $500 million dollars to three out of 7 regions in upstate New York to jump-start the region’s economies and promote growth.

As part of the Central New York region application for the competition, the city and the downtown partnership have submitted over $166 million worth of ideas that look to transform Downtown Cortland and the county into a recreation destination.

One of the requests is for a flagship hotel to be built downtown. The $25 million dollar project calls for a five-story 100 room hotel with an attached parking garage.

Partnership Director Adam Megivern says efforts to develop an arts and entertainment district downtown have been successful and adding a hotel would allow visitors to stay overnight and further support local spending.

The city has requested over $12 million to fund the on-going Clinton Ave. gateway project. The city is looking to improve its connection between Main Street and I-81 through a series of improvements.

Linking business travelers to downtown is expected to help the local economy as well.

The third big idea project submitted for funding calls for over $129 million worth of slope side improvements at Greek Peak ski resort in Virgil.

Megivern says the goal there is to offer visitors to the region another reason to visit and stay. Last year, the state awarded $800 thousand dollars to promote local skiing.

In recent years, the state has put an emphasis on eco-tourism projects to pull in outside tourism dollars.

The announcement for the upstate revitalization awards is expected this fall.
