Cortland Students From Students Against Destructive Decisions Hold Event to Show Dangers of Driving While Intoxicated

Yesterday inside the Cortland Jr./Sr. High School Gymnasium, students from Cortland Schools Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) held an event to show students the dangers of driving while intoxicated. SADD partnered with the school, Cortland County Health Department, City of Cortland Police Department, and the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office.

The event was held throughout the school day for students to participate. During the event students used a driving simulator with pedal cars and goggles that simulated an intoxicated condition. In addition, a driving simulator was also provided by the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office told X101 News the simulator is through the state-wide STOP-DWI initiative.

The simulator puts the students in the “drivers seat” of a vehicle in a variety of situations. Students who used the simulator were given a variety of conditions such as weather, night/day, country/city driving, and what level their Blood Alcohol Content was in the simulator to show the effects impairment does when operating a motor vehicle.

Gabby Hooko, President for the Cortland’s Students Against Destructive Decisions told X101 News last they organized a mock dwi crash and wanted to try something different this year to get students engaged. Liz Scanlon, Vice President of SADD and Gabby both expressed how they felt having another successful event for their fellow students.

The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) is a student-led organization who work to influence not only themselves, but others to make healthy decisions in everyday challenges.
