Cortland County Sheriff, Mark Helms, is warning residents in Cortland County of a scam phone call a resident received on Tuesday, June 11th. The Sheriff’s Office says the resident was contacted by an unknown phone number with the caller leaving the resident a voicemail to have them call them back.

The number the caller provided the resident was a Cortland area-code (607). The caller had identified themselves as a member of the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office and warned the resident if they failed to call back they would “face severe civil and criminal penalties.”

Sheriff Helms is reminding residents the Sheriff’s Office will never contact anyone by phone asking for money, donations, or offer payment through the phone to avoid any civil or criminal penalties.

Residents should be aware of calls like this occurring, Helms noted and to never provide personal information or give any type of payment or banking account information to anyone over the phone.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking if you have received a phone call similar to this, to report it to the Sheriff’s Office by calling 607-753-3311.
