Cortland Sheriff’s Office Stop Drunk Drivers

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Officer conducted their High Visibility Campaign over the Thanksgiving long weekend that included an increased patrol and lookout for impaired drivers.



During the campaign, the Sheriff’s Office was able to get violators for driving drunk and keep other motorists safe during holiday travels.


Around 10pm on Wednesday, November 23rd, a traffic stop was conducted by officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department in the Town of Cortlandville for a traffic violation.

During the traffic stop, officers found that the operator of the vehicle, 42 year old Heather L. Shimer of Cortland, was driving drunk. Officers arrested Shimer and transported her to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Officer to be processed.

Shimer was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated .18% or more BAC, and DWI, both misdemeanors. She was also charged with multiple traffic infractions.

She was released on her own recognizance with appearance tickets to Town of Cortlandville Court at a later date.


On Thursday, November 24th around 4:30 in the morning, Cortland County Sheriff deputies responded to a reported single vehicle crash near Gutchess International on Mclean Rd in the Town of Cortlandville.

Through an investigation deputies determined the operator of the vehicle, 32 year old Joseph R. Baker of Dryden, was intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, and multiple violations.

Baker was processed and and later released on his own recognizance a few hours later. He is to reappear in Town of Cortlandville Court at a later date.


Saturday, November 26th around 7:45pm on Route 13 in the Town of Homer, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a complaint of a vehicle driving erratically.

Officers were able to find the vehicle in the Town of Cuyler on Route 13 still and proceeded to conduct a traffic stop. During the traffic stop officers found the operator of the vehicle, 47 year old Ronald T. Proctor II, was driving drunk.

He was arrested and charged with Aggravated DWI, and DWI, both misdemeanors. Proctor was taken to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Officer where he was processed and then released with appearance tickets to return to Town of Cuyler Court at a later date.
