Cortland Sheriff Warns of Law Enforcement Impersonation Scam
Cortland County Sheriff Mark Helms is alerting the public after the Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of several scam phones in the past few days. Helms says the scam calls have been contacting residents with the caller claiming to be a member of law enforcement.
Sheriff Helms says no law enforcement agency will ever contact residents and ask for a payment over the phone, or ask for personal information including your bank account number. Helms says you should never provide personal information over the phone or internet to people you are not familiar with.
“If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member or Law Enforcement Officer, hang up the call and contact that family member or the Cortland County 911 Center. If you are asked to pay off any fines, fees, or payments with a gift card, Apple Card, or other payment code, it is most likely a scam, do not provide any information.” Helms said.
Anyone who received a call that seems suspicious, contact law enforcement for assistance.
